10 years of Greenmotions Film Festival – and not a bit tired yet!

Dear cinema enthusiasts!

The Greenmotions Film Festival is celebrating its 10 year anniversary! Originally launched by a group of international students of the Master in Renewable Energy of the University of Freiburg, the festival was first organized in 2014. Back then, it was called the “Greenstorming Filmfestival” and it took place over two days on the university’s premises.

A lot has happened since then: the festival has changed its name, the association Greenmotions e.V. was created, team members have come and gone. Since 2015, it has found its home in Kommunales Kino in the Alte Wiehrebahnhof and has become a permanent fixture in Freiburg’s cinema landscape over the years.  In 2018, the first Special Topic Award was introduced, allowing us to focus on specific questions every year. In 2023, we opened up to a younger public with our Short Film for Children Award. Over the years, we have also had the luck of working with some partners, such as Haus des Engagements, Solare Zukunft and the Agrikultur Festival.

We would be lying if we said we didn’t go through a few lows, the hardest of them being the canceled edition of 2020 due to the COVID pandemic. Yet, we keep coming back, always with the same mission: to touch people with solution-oriented films and encourage them to become part of the change towards a more sustainable world. We want to inform, inspire and stimulate fruitful discussions. We also like experimenting.

To this end and because anniversaries should be properly celebrated, we will be organizing various events in addition to the festival this year! Follow us on our social media channels and subscribe to our newsletter to stay up to date throughout the year. We look forward to seeing you there!
