Special Topic: Climate Justice: Perspectives and Solutions from the Global South

On Friday evening, we invite you to the second session of this year’s special topic: “Climate justice – solutions and perspectives from the Global South”. This session combines two inspiring movies, one about an environmental activist from Nigeria and one about the dangers of capitalist extracitivism for the Amazon rainforest and its inhabitants.

Am Freitagabend laden wir zur zweiten Sitzung des diesjährigen Sonderthemas: „Klimagerechtigkeit – Lösungen und Perspektiven aus dem Globalen Süden“ ein. Diese Sitzung kombiniert zwei inspirierende Filme: Der eine erzählt die Geschichte eines nigerianischen Umweltaktivisten, der andere berichtet über die Gefahren des kapitalistischen Extraktivismus für den Amazonasregenwald und dessen Bewohner*innen.

Through historical footage and interviews with family members, the historical documentary „I Am More Dangerous Dead“ sheds light on the prolific personality of Ken Saro-Wiwa, who was not only a poet, writer and TV producer, but also an environmental activist and founder of the civil rights movement MOSOP, which challenged Shells blatant, decades long destruction of the Niger Deltas nature through uncontrolled oil spills and gas flaring. While Wiwa gained fame and respect among his people, the Ogoni, he was not widely known beyond his home country of Nigeria, until his life story turned dramatic, when he in 1993 lead a series of peaceful MOSOP marches for the preservation of his people’s land against on of the worlds most powerful oil companies. Shells reckless influence on the nigerian military regime eventually lead to a spectacular show trial of international attention against Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists, with the aim to sentence them to death by hanging.

Anhand historischer Aufnahmen und Interviews mit Familienmitgliedern beleuchtet der historische Dokumentarfilm „I Am More Dangerous Dead“ die beeindruckende Persönlichkeit von Ken Saro-Wiwa, der nicht nur Dichter, Autor und Fernsehproduzent war , sondern auch Umweltaktivist und Gründer der Bürgerrechtsbewegung MOSOP, die Shells eklatante, jahrzehntelange Zerstörung der Natur des Nigerdeltas durch unkontrollierte Ölverschmutzungen und Gasabfackeln in Frage stellte. Während Wiwa unter seinem Volk, den Ogoni, Ruhm und Respekt erlangte, war er über sein Heimatland Nigeria hinaus kaum bekannt, bis seine Lebensgeschichte dramatisch wurde, als er 1993 eine Reihe friedlicher MOSOP-Märsche für den Schutz des Landes seines Volkes gegen einen der mächtigsten Ölkonzerne der Welt anführte. Shells rücksichtsloser Einfluss auf das nigerianische Militärregime führte schließlich zu einem spektakulären Schauprozess von internationalem Aufsehen gegen Wiwa und acht weitere Ogoni-Aktivisten mit dem Ziel, sie zum Tode durch Erhängen zu verurteilen.

Threatened Tapajos

The indigenous people that inhabit the region of the Tapajós River in the Brazilian Amazon are being threatened. Major infrastructure projects such as railroads, waterways, agribusiness and mining are being developed in the region as part of the expanding of international capital over the forest. The documentary follows more than twenty indigenous leaders to listen closely to what they have to say. The struggle of these people to maintain their ways of life is essential to keep the forest standing and the river alive.

Die indigene Bevölkerung der Region des Tapajós-Flusses im brasilianischen Amazonasgebiet ist bedroht. Im Zuge der Ausweitung des internationalen Kapitals über den Wald werden in der Region große Infrastrukturprojekte wie Eisenbahnen, Wasserstraßen, Agrarwirtschaft und Bergbau ausgebaut. Der Dokumentarfilm begleitet mehr als zwanzig indigene Anführer*innen, um genau zuzuhören, was sie zu sagen haben. Der Kampf dieser Menschen um die Aufrechterhaltung ihrer Lebensweise ist unerlässlich, um den Wald und den Fluss am Leben zu erhalten.
