Who’s behind greenmotions?

Our history

The Greenmotions film festival, formerly Greenstorming, was launched in 2014 by an international group of students enrolled in the Master’s programme Renewable Energy Management at the university of Freiburg. Soon afterwards, volunteers from other fields joined the team, continued the work and eventually founded the non-profit association Greenmotions. Since 2018 Greenmotions benefits from the official support of the city of Freiburg, allowing us to finance the equivalent of three six-months minijobs per year. The rest – and the majority – of the work is done on a volunteer basis.

Our vision

We envision a world where sustainability isn’t a niche cause but a shared societal mindset. Protecting the planet remains our core, but we think bigger: we see nature, the environment, people, politics and the economy as an inseparable web. True care for the earth means championing social justice and recognising how these strands influence one another. By nurturing open, respectful dialogue, we want to co‑create a fair, resilient future for everyone.

Our missions

We use film as a catalyst – We believe that film and culture are powerful drivers of dialogue. By curating and screening eco‑focused films that ignite conversation and enriching them with panels, workshops and Q&A sessions, we deepen understanding of environmental issues, sustainability and just transition.

We activate change makers – We turn screenings into a call‑to‑action hub, sharing concrete ideas, resources and pathways so participants can make a real impact locally and globally, while weaving environmental protection together with social justice.

We amplify the regional community and civic network – We turn the festival into a networking platform for NGOs, cultural groups, filmmakers and citizens in Freiburg and beyond, and we expand our reach with year‑round screenings in partnership with diverse local partners.

Together, we transform audiovisual storytelling into a powerful tool for education, community building and collective action toward a fair, resilient future.

Our values

Three pillars guide how we work internally and partner with the wider world.

  • Sustainability – We protect the planet and advance social justice while designing workloads that keep our team healthy and resources balanced.
  • Connection – We stay linked to nature, to each other, and to diverse perspectives, turning collaboration into a vibrant community that fuels fresh ideas.
  • Respect – We value every contribution, big or small, honor every voice, set realistic expectations, and continuously refine our processes so they serve people—not the other way around.

These three pillars are the values we continually strive to embody—an invitation for everyone to adopt and grow with them.

The association thrives on the volunteer spirit of its members— a vibrant mix of students and professionals ranging from their early  20s to mid‑40s (and beyond). Because of our history, we are used to working in English and German, and give priority to English when international volunteers are there. Want to join the team? Then check here how to do it!
