The Cost of Growth
Director: Thomas Maddens
Duration: 93 min
Language: English
Subtitles: English
The “Green Deal” marked an important step in Europe’s effort to reduce its contribution to climate change. In practice, however, the interests of people and the environment are often ignored when energy facilities are being built. This is especially true for those living at these potential energy plant sites, echoing practices of displacements in service of coal mines and factories.
Activists Anuna De Wever and Lena Hartog take us on a journey through Serbia, Sápmi and Italy to explore the current state of the climate movement in Europe. Rather than treating ecological transition as separate from questions of industry and war, the film shows the connections between climate politics and struggles against arms production, austerity, colonialism and global inequality.
The film will be followed by a discussion online with the producer Lena Hartog.
