Special topic

Each year, our team decides on a special topic, which will be a point of emphasis in the upcoming festival. The prize for the best movie in this category is given out by a jury of filmmakers and experts. This year’s topic is “Closing the Loop: Living Within Planetary Boundaries.”

During the festival several movies will highlight ways in which we can alter systems to be more circular and respect the limited resources on our planet.

Feature films / Audience award

In our main category, we show numerous medium to feature length films (20 minutes or more) that relate to topics like sustainability, environmentalism and social justice. The winner of the award is decided upon by our audience, who have a chance to rate the movie after the screening. At the end of the festival we count the votes and the best rated movie is crowned as the winner of the audience award.

Short films

Of course, we also want to showcase exceptional movies about sustainability and environmentalism topics that are shorter than 20 minutes. During our festival we therefore have a dedicated short film session in which we screen several short films that have previously been decided upon by a jury of experts. The jury also chooses a winner, that is crowned at the end of the short film session.

Kids & Young audience short films

At our festival we show a selection of short movies to groups of younger guests. The movies that are shown are decided upon ahead of time by us and are accompanied by moderation during the screening. The children, generally aged between 4 and 8, get the chance to vote for the movie they enjoyed the most anonymously and thereby elect the winner themselves. Throughout the year we also show movies from this category at schools and in day care facilities.

FAQs

How much does it cost to submit a movie?

Submitting your film costs about 5 Euros. The cost varies slightly from year to year.

How long does it take until I know if my film has been accepted?

Since we are a small team consisting mostly of volunteers, the selection of the movies for our festival takes some time. You will, however, be notified whether we can include your movie in the programme a few months before the festival.

How long does my film need to be in order to be considered for the individual categories?

Audience award: Between 20 and 120 minutes.

Special topic: No longer than 120 minutes.

Short films: No longer than 20 minutes.

Kids movies: Should be no longer than 30 minutes in order to be considered for the festival. They should also be appropriate for viewers between 5 and 12 years old.

Does my film need subtitles in order to be shown at the festival?

If the language of your film is neither English nor German, it will need to have subtitles in either of those languages for us to be able to show it. Because we always have a lot of international guests at our festival, we are always happy if German movies have English subtitles too.

How old can my movie be, to be shown at the festival?

At our festival we show movies that were released in the current year as well the two years before that
