GREENMOTIONS FILM FESTIVAL 2024
06.11.2024 – 10.11.2024

Greenmotions is coming back for a 10th edition!

We are happy to announce that the Greenmotions Film Festival will be opening its doors again this year.

From November 6th until the 10th, we will be at the Kommunales Kino of Freiburg with a program full of exciting films and discussions. Those who have already visited us know it: every year, we dedicate part of our program to a special question. This year’s Special Topic is: “United in Change – Striving for a Just Transition”. We are looking forward to showing films that are shedding light on the fair ways to make our societies transition towards a sustainable future.

This edition of the festival is also a very special one, as the Greenmotions Film Festival celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2024! To this end, we have organised a special anniversary program.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Program

Screenings will take place at Kommunales Kino, Urachstraße 40, 79102 Freiburg. Our festival program will be put online in autumn.

Since we are a festival which intends to raise awareness of sustainability topics, we aim for inclusivity and fairness. Therefore, since the foundation of Greenmotions Film Festival, we have been using the Pay-After System, through which the audience can decide voluntarily whether and how much they want to contribute to the event after participating. We adopted this system to give everyone the opportunity to participate in the festival, including people with limited financial possibilities.

Information on accessibility can be found on the separate pages of the events.

Film Competition

Each year, the volunteers team of Greenmotions curates a program of solution-oriented, constructive and empowering movies about sustainability-related topics.

Films that are selected for the festival are in competition for one of four Awards.

Feature films focusing on general sustainability topics compete for the Audience Award. You are invited, as part of our public, to rate the films you see. The film with the best rates will win the Award. This year, we have eight films competing within that category. All films competing for the Audience Award are documentaries. The winner will be announced at the Award ceremony on Saturday evening. This Award is sponsored by EWS (ElektrizitätsWerk-Schönau).

We also curated a program for our Special Topic of the Year: “United in Change? Striving for a Just Transition”. Seven films are competing within that category and the winner is designated by a Jury. All films competing for the Special Topic Award are documentaries. The winner will be announced at the Award ceremony on Saturday evening.

On Saturday morning and on Sunday afternoon, a session of short films for children has been programmed. The short films are mainly animation films. There have no dialogue. Children are invited to vote for their favourite film. The winner will be announced at the Award Ceremony specifically organised for this Award. This ceremony takes place on Sunday afternoon. Children who come and vote on the Saturday also have the possibility to come for the Award ceremony on Sunday at 15.00. The Award is supported by the Ökostation.

Finally, you also have the possibility to attend a session of short films, curated by a jury that also appoints the winner of the Short Film Award. Shorts of different genres are included in the programme.  The short film session introduces the Award ceremony and takes place on Saturday evening.

We hope you enjoy our program!

About us

Starting under the name Greenstorming in 2014, the festival was first organized by students as part of their Master’s Program in Renewable Energy Management at the University of Freiburg. Since then, Greenmotions Film Festival has grown to become a meeting point for filmmakers, local initiatives and our public.
